Shopping for a realistic TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) doll and dressing her up is an activity many owners enjoy. However, there’s a potential issue: darker or brightly colored clothes can sometimes bleed and cause stains on the doll. TPE dolls are particularly prone to staining because the material tends to attract dye. While most stains fade over time, some owners prefer to remove the blemish sooner.
Household Items to Remove Stains
You don’t need to buy a special stain remover for TPE dolls; there are plenty of household items that can help. For example, applying teeth-whitening toothpaste to the stained area can accelerate the fading process because it contains hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Let it sit before washing it off.
Hydrogen peroxide is effective on color, and acne creams containing 10% benzoyl peroxide have also been found to work well as stain removers. Affordable options like Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Cream or OXY 10 Acne Cleanser are widely available. Apply the cream to the stain, let it sit for 24 hours, and then wipe it off with a cloth. If you’re in a rush, you can wash it off after two hours, as it will continue to work over the next few days. Repeat the process if the stain persists, or allow the remainder to fade naturally.
Time Heals Most Stains
TPE is porous, much like a dense, oily sponge. Over time, the oils in the material will dissolve dye stains. However, there’s no set timeline for how long this process will take, as different TPE blends react differently to stains. Stains on some brands may fade quickly, while others take longer. Doing nothing could mean the stain fades in a few weeks or several months.
Precautions
From experience, dark-colored clothing, especially red items, take the longest to fade. Cheaper fabrics like polyester and nylon are more likely to bleed dye and cause stains compared to higher-quality garments. 100% cotton and good-quality sports bras generally don’t leave stains.
The only reliable way to test whether a piece of clothing will stain is to conduct a trial. Wrap the fabric around a TPE sample and place a heavy object on it, leaving it for a day or two. While some clothes may not normally stain, long-term contact with the doll can still lead to slight marks over time.
It’s also important to launder new clothes thoroughly in hot water before putting them on the doll. Washing clothes in 60°C (140°F) water helps to remove any loose dye. Alternatively, soak the clothes in hot water with a teaspoon of Retayne for 20 minutes. This treatment helps lock in the color and has proven to be effective.
